UK sole traders, keep more of what you earn. A deduction-aware companion for UK sole traders — capture receipts, categorise against HMRC’s SA103 framework, and hand your accountant a clean pack.

Open Windfall

Getting started

  1. Create an account at windfall.keptorganised.com.
  2. Photograph or upload a receipt the same way you already do — Windfall is just where that photo goes now.
  3. Check the suggested HMRC category and keep or correct it.
  4. When the quarter closes, export the pack your accountant actually wants.

FAQs

Is this an accounting suite?
No. Windfall finds and organises allowable expenses. It does not replace your accountant or file your return.
Do I need to connect a bank?
Not for the first version. Receipt capture is enough to start. Bank connection is a later upgrade once the habit is in place.
Who is it for?
UK sole traders who already photograph receipts and suspect they are leaving legitimate deductions on the table.

Making Tax Digital

Does Windfall handle Making Tax Digital?
Not directly. Windfall doesn't send quarterly updates to HMRC, doesn't file your Self Assessment return, and isn't HMRC-recognised MTD software. What it does is solve the part that trips most people up before any of that matters: turning a receipt into an accurately categorised expense record, the moment it happens.
Am I actually affected by MTD, and when?

Based on your gross income from self-employment and property (not profit):

  • Over £50,000 — in scope from 6 April 2026
  • £30,000–£50,000 — in scope from 6 April 2027
  • £20,000–£30,000 — in scope from 6 April 2028
  • Under £20,000 — not currently in scope

Check GOV.UK directly to confirm your own dates, since this can change.

What does MTD actually require?
Digital records of income and expenses kept as you go, quarterly summary updates (category totals, not a line-by-line breakdown) sent through compatible software, and a final declaration by 31 January.
Does record-keeping software and filing software have to be the same tool?
No. They can be separate, as long as they connect properly rather than relying on retyping numbers between them. This is the most commonly misunderstood part of MTD; a lot of tools only solve one half of it.
How does Windfall fit into this?
You photograph a receipt, get a suggested HMRC category with the reasoning shown, and confirm or adjust it. By the time a quarter ends, you have a categorised record ready to hand to your accountant or feed into whatever software handles the actual submission. Windfall is the record-keeping half, not the filing half.
Is this tax advice?
No. This page is general orientation, not guidance for your specific situation. For anything you're relying on, check GOV.UK directly or talk to an accountant.
